Are My Food Sensitivities Forever?!

Are My Food Sensitivities Forever?

This is a common question many people ask me when they suspect food sensitivities may be the root of their bloated Buddha bellies, inflamed rashy skin, IBS or the 100’s of other documented potential food sensitivity symptoms.

Before I answer this I need to be very clear on what I mean by food sensitivities…

There are 3 types of food reactions; food allergies, food intolerances and food sensitivities.

There are 3 types of food reactions; food allergies, food intolerances and food sensitivities.

Food Allergy: This is a classic allergic response (anaphylaxis), symptoms usually appear immediately. The Skin Prick Test administered by a conventional Allergy Specialist is how to test for this type of allergy.

Food Intolerance: When the body is lacking a specific enzyme necessary to break a particular food down. For example; persons who are lactose intolerant lack the enzyme lactase which is needed to digestion lactose (dairy protein).

And finally…

Food Sensitivity: An immune response by the body on a specific food. Involves a completely different type of antibody then your classic allergic response. These will not show up on Skin Prick Test but may show up on food sensitivity test administered by your Healthcare Practitioner.

What's the deal with food sensitivities...

What I am talking about today is strictly food sensitivities which can be difficult to pinpoint as your specific symptom can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 days to appear.

'' 75% of out immune system resides

in the gut this is primarily where our

body decides what is friend or foe...'

Since 75% of our immune system resides in the gut this is primarily where our body decides what is friend or foe and whether to launch an attack or not. One of the biggest gut disorders that has been linked to food sensitivities is Intestinal Permeability (aka: Leaky Gut). Leaky gut allows larger than normal food proteins into the blood stream, which sets off alarm bells in our immune system and flags certain foods as a threat. And this is normally how our food sensitivities are born!

As we continue to eat these foods our bodies have become sensitive to, inflammation in the gut becomes constant and makes the leaking worse.

So if we can pinpoint our food sensitivities with absolute certainty, remove them from the diet to decrease gut inflammation and support the body with deep digestive healing, then in time we can often reintroduce these foods later with success!

This is exactly what happened to me with my beloved dairy. I discovered only after eliminating it for a month that it was the instigator in my rashy inflamed skin and childhood history of eczema and chronic tonsillitis. After removing it, focusing on my own healing and giving my body space to heal, I joyfully found I can now enjoy good quality diary once again! Hurray for our amazing body and its incredible ability to rebuild and recover when strongly supported.
